The President Pro Tempore of the US Senate follows the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Following him is the Secretary of State, the Secretary of the Treasury, the Secretary of Defense and then the Attorney General of the United States. There has never been a Speaker of the House to be elevated to Vice President and then to President. However, if the President and Vice President was to die or resign, the Speaker of the House would be next in line.
The Speaker of the House is the second in line of succession behind the vice president.
