In Scripture, 'El' means 'might, strength, power.' The primary meaning of this root - 'god' for Pagan or False, 'God' for the true God of Israel, and sometimes 'the mighty' when referring to men or angels. Usually when describing God, there are additional words used to further define the meaning and to distinguish from false gods. Examples are:

El Shaddai - The All Sufficient God (Genesis 17:1 and many other places)

El Echad - The One God (Malachi 2:10)

El Emet - The God of Truth (Psalm 31:5).

This word is believed to be of Ugaritic origin (Ugarat, Syria) circa 14th - 12th Centuries BC. It was not uncommon for the children of Israel to borrow terms from surrounding peoples to give a more contemporary meaning to their writings.

El was the ancient Canaanite father of the gods and chief god and creator of the world. By the first millennium, El was the common name by which the people who lived in central Palestine each worshipped their own principal deity during the first millennium. Thus, the Israelites and Judahites began to refer to Yahweh (YHWH) as El, using a plural form, Elohim.

Keel and Uehlinger (Gods, Goddesses, and Images of God: In Ancient Israel) say that Yahweh and El were already identified with each other in Iron Age I or, at the latest, by Iron Age IIA. Thus we have the Book of Genesis speak of Elohim (the Hebrew plural of El, but used in a singular sense) and YHWH synonymously. El was also synonymous with the moon god and therefore brought lunar features to Yahweh, who had previously been known as the storm god.

That is one of the names of God. Because all the names are generic except one, they (including El) are sometimes used to refer to other authorities (judges, angels, etc). See also:
