Florida's Senior Senator is Bill Nelson of the Democratic Party. He assumed office on January 3, 2001, after defeating Bill McCollum of the Republican party to fill the Senate seat vacated by Republican Senator Connie Mack.
Senator Nelson was reelected in 2006 and 2012. Senator Bill Nelson was a member of the Florida house of Representatives from 1972-1979, and a six term US congressman from 1979-1991. He is also the second member of the United States House of Representatives to fly in space while a sitting Congressman. He flew as a payload specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia.
