Jackie Chan has a complicated family history. Both his parents {Charles (Dec 18 1914 - 26 February 2008) and Lee-Lee Chan (1916 - 2002) were previously married before they met each other. His father Charles is from a small village in Anhui Province, China. His first wife died of cancer leaving Charles and his two sons (Fang Shisheng Fang Shide) to fend for themselves. Charles left the boys in the care of family and made his way to Nanjing where he succesfully traded in textiles. Unfortunately this was not entirely legal trade and he and his 'gang' were imprisoned by the Japanese and subjected to daily torture. After the intervention of a family member he was released from jail, the only one of the 'gang' to survive and left Nanjing thus escaping the infamous 'Rape of Nanjing'. He then made his way to Shanghai.

The Japanese invasion of China had other serious consequences. The boys he left behind were left without a guardian and became beggers on the street to survive. Further away Japanese bombs killed Lee-Lee Chan's husband leaving her and her two daughters (Guilan Chan and Yulan Chan) without any income. Lee-Lee also did what so many did to survive. She left her daughters with family and made her way to Shanghai to try to earn some money in the big city. She heard that opium smuggling made money so she bought some opium but was caught by none other than Charles Chan, who was now in the military, the Kuomintang. He took pity on her and released her but the two formed a relationship from that day on.

Later on Charles escaped China to Taiwan (1947) and then to Hong Kong where he found work at the French Embassy. Reunited in 1950 the two worked together at the French Embassy where they had Jackie Chan (7 April 1954). Some years later Charles was offered a job at the American Embassy in Canberra, Australia, an opportunity that was too good to pass up. By this time Jackie was already enrolled at the Peking Opera School run by Jim Yuen, so the family were parted. Charles went to Australia leaving Jackie and his mom in Hong Kong. A few years later Charles had enough money to pay for Lee-Lee to join him in Australia and Jackie was left alone in Hong Kong, unofficially adopted by Jim Yuen.

Because Charles Chan (in reality Fang Dao Long) worked for the Kuomintang, when he arrived in Hong Kong, he borrowed Lee-Lee Chan's family name in order to protect his past. After Jackie was born he secretly registered Jackie's birth in the ancestral records in Anhui as Fang Si Long.

Jackie's son Jaycee, after Charles revealed the family secrets in 2001 (you can see the documentary of this 'Traces of a Dragon') officially changed his name from 'Chan' to 'Fong' in 2005. Jackie has not adopted the family name.

Lee-Lee Chan was reunited with her daughters in Australia after she fell ill. They came to Australia to help Charles look after her in her last years. They are married and still reside in Australia with their children and grandchildren.

Fang Shisheng and Fang Shide also both married and continued to live and work in Anhui. Charles was reunited with them in 2005 and visited the family regularly until his death in 2008. Charles also paid for the Ancestral Hall to be restored. The extended family in Anhui is quite large. Shisheng had 5 children and Shide had 3.

Just recently (August 2013) Jackie Chan made his first visit to Anhui to meet his family and pay respects in the Ancestral Hall.
