He belongs to the Sabiny ethnic group found in the Elgon Mountains that border Uganda and Kenya. This is the same high altitude plateau that produces strong distance athletes in Kenya. Kipsiro is reputed for his humility and soft-spokenness despite his successes. He is the best athlete Uganda has produced since John Akii-Bua.
