Raúl Castro (born June 3, 1931) is Fidel Castro's younger brother. He became the acting president of Cuba in July 2006, when the aging Fidel (then 79) transferred power to him because of health issues. In February, 2008, Raul assumed the full office of President of Cuba through election by the National Assembly.
Raul has been by Fidel's side since the beginning of the revolution, and was instrumental in forming an alliance with the Soviet Union.
