The Soviet Union (in full, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, 1922-91) was a federation of states that had been part of the former Russian Empire until 1917, plus some territories annexed at the end of World War II.

Until 1922 the Russian republic represented the others internationally, but in that year a Union government was established, and new republics were created in the next few years for principal nationalities. Russia remained the largest republic within the Union, with most of its population.

The number of republics changed somewhat over the USSR's existence, but from 1956 to 1990 there were fifteen: most were governed by national sections of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union: only Russia lacked its own national party, as it was feared that this would be seen as too dominant within the CPSU.

In 1991 the Communist Party fell from power and the Union disintegrated into its constituent republics, each of which became fully independent. The Commonwealth of Independent States was created to act as a loose association for most of the successor states.

Look at the name of the Ukrainian socialist republic in Russian:

Ukrainskaya Sovetskaya Sotsialisticheskaya Respublika

Now, the name in Ukrainian:

Ukrayins'ka Radyans'ka Sotsialistychna Respublika

It seems that the word SOVIET has a root in the word RADIANT... Now you can see that in most communist/socialist coat of arms you can see a sun and its sunrays...

Hope this is a good start (?),

The actual meaning or translation of the word SOVIET is COUNCIL, as in to be given advice by a advisory committee.

Soviet is another word for council. In theory the workers collectively own the means of production (farm, factory, etc.) and decide how to distribute the products. in practice however, the USSR practiced state capitalism, where the means of production was owned by the state and the state made decisions for the workers and subsequently took the products from the workers. In a sense the "soviet" bureaucrats became the new capitalist class. the closest soviet communism ever came to manifesting itself was in Titoist Yugoslavia where worker of factories practiced workers self management (where each worker got one vote in major decisions), sold there goods on an open market and shared the profits among themselves
