Excalibur was the sword which King Arthur pulled from the stone, and in pulling it from the stone, proving that he was Uther Pendragons son, securing his seat on the throne.
The easiest way is to start from when Merlin, who was a magician later on, served Uther Pendragon and was rewarded his baby and left with the Pendragons never seeing the baby for years.
Arthur was the son of Uther and Ygraine - but Ygraine was NOT Uther's wife when Arthur was conceived. Had Uther and Ygraine had other legitimately conceived children, Aurthr would have been .... "inconvenient", and a potential threat to Uther's other sons. For Arthur's own safety, Merlin took the infant Arthur away to be raised separately. One more point; there is only ONE KING AT A TIME. If Uther was King, then Arthur could not be - and Arthur could not be King while Uther lived.
King Uther was crazy in love with the Duke of Cornwall's wife, Igraine. He wanted her as a lover but she refused him, loyal to her husband. King Uther became depressed. Merlin promised Uther he could spend the night with her, disguised as Gorlois (the Duke). Merlin's only condition was to take their child once he was born. Uther, desperate for love with Igraine, agreed. The Duke was killed in Terabyll. And Uther & Igraine ended up together. They had their son, and gave him up to Merlin, as promised.

King Uther Pendragon is the father of King Arthur.
He was the illegitimate son of Igraine of Cornwall - a nobleman's wife - and King Uther Pendragon, but he was raised by a manor lord.
Yes, Uther did.
According to most sources, King Arthur was born of King Uther Pendragon and Igraine, who was wife of the Duke of Cornwall before she married Pendragon. Uther, consumed with obsession/love/lust (whatever you believe), rallied his army and attacked Cornwall. In the course of the battle, Cornwall was killed, and Igraine and Pendragon married, bearing Arthur. However, threat of Saxon attack moved Pendragon to foster out his child. Arthur grew up never knowing of his royal birth. Until, of course, he first laid eyes on glimmering Excalibur.
Nimueh was a friend of Uther (Arthur's dad) and when Uther's wife Ygraine couldn't give birth to a son, Uther called Nimueh who was a powerful sorceress to help give birth to a son. Not to Uther or Nimueh's knowledge would Ygraine die.. To create a life the balance of the world had to be made. To create a life you must give a life. To save a life you must give a life. Nimueh knew that but what she did not know was that Ygraine's life would be the result of Arthur's birth. Uther sent Nimueh to be executed but she had left before he could execute her. Nimueh was basically a sorceress that was brought to help a birth, but in the presence it accidentally killed Ygraine.
