Who is in charge of a country depends on which country we are speaking about; there are numerous countries that are representative democracies. The head of the US is the President, while the head of the UK is split between the Queen and the Prime Minister.

Why is there a difference between a direct democracy and a representative democracy?

In a direct democracy an assembly of the citizens decides on all matters of government and law. In a representative democracy, citizens elect representatives to a parliament, and these representatives vote on the issues of government. Direct democracy is not possible in a large state as it has been impracticable for citizens to travel regularly to an assembly over large distances. The problem with representatives is 'do they really represent the opinions of their electors?' With the internet it would now be possible to take direct peoples' votes regularly, but don't hold your breath waiting for the politicians to give up their power and perks.

What features does ancient greek democracy share with modern day democracy?

The desire to have rule by the citizens. The Greek city-states did this by the citizens meeting regularly in assembly and voting on decisions. In modern representative democracy, the citizens elect representative to a parliament to do the decision-making for them, but the problem is that these representatives do not necessarily do what their electors want. The internet now offers an opportunity to go back to direct democracy, but the politicians will strongly resist being displaced.

What is the same about ancient Athens democrcy and your democracy now?

Very little. Athens had a direct democracy, where the citizens met fortnightly and made decisions which the Council implemented. Today we have representative democracy where the people elect representatives to a parliament which makes the decisions on their behalf between elections.

Can a country be a electoral democracy and not be considered free?

Yes. We are not really free, and we don't have a true democracy. What we have is a representative democracy. We don't really make decisions. We elect people to make decisions for us, and they often have motives other than our best interests at heart. You might think of a good law that would help many, but if it is not politically expediant, no representative will sponsor it. Also, think of the many things we could say and do a decade ago that we cannot do now. We still have a representative democracy, at least at face value, but we continually seem to be losing freedoms.
