Napoleon Bonaparte (1769 - 1821) was a French military an political leader, who tried to conquer Europe for the French Empire. During the Peninsular War (1808 - 1814) Napoleon attacked both Portugal and Spain, who allied themselves with Britain to counterattack France. During this age of turmoil, all Spanish and Portuguese colonies in the Americas saw the opportunity to secede, and ultimately did. Mexico claimed its independendence on September 16, 1810, winning it on September 27, 1821.
