With the booming first albums whatever people say I am that what i m not , Arctic Monkeys absolutely the best indie band in the world. They beat the legends The Beatles in selling album in first week. The Arctic Monkeys has potential to be a next the greatest band in the world.
1) Ira Kaplan : Yo La Tengo
2) Tanya Donelly : Throwing Muses,Breeders & Belly
3) Tim Gane : Stereolab
Sorry J. Mascius Fans but J WAS NOT INDIE,more like Neil Young meets Stevie Ray Vaughn
Sorry Sonic Youth Fans but Thurston & Lee were influential but neither could "pull it off"
Solo.
Kevin Shields (MBV) or Brad Laner (Medicine)...? No close but were too dependent on
effects,more texture than Guitar.
Jack White ?? LOL!! That Fake, not only not Indie but BLUES,that's right John
Lee Hooker Roadhouse Blues & Hooker did it better !
3) Tim Gane...Picked up where Lou Reed/VU left off..raunchy,dissident,open chords
saw Stereolab twice, once at Tramps in Manhattan..Yo La Tengo's backyard & Stereolab blew YLT off the stage..Believe it !! Gane didn't out do Kaplan but close...Stereolab was the best Live Band Ever...TIGHT !!..I saw them again at the 9:30 Club DC a few yrs. later...Gane's Guitar was the driving creative force behind "The Lab"..much like Keith is to the Stone's..not flashy, but "the gut's" of every song.
2) Arguebly # 1 however had the unenviable task of 1st playing w/Kirsten Hersh & 2nd Kim Deal...The two Reigning Queens of Indie Rock...Kirsten & Kims Lyrics & Vocals came first, guitar a supporting lead..much like Harrison had to defer to Lennon & Mc Cartney & her Muses & Breeders guitar playing was pushed back in the mix..by the time she got her own band her best Guitar Work had been recorded & her songs were dwarfed by the Colossal Talent's of Hersh/Deal...HOWEVER Yo La Tengo had been around since 84..minor sucess, but after Muses Real Ramona (listen to Tanya on Hook in Her Head) & her subsequent Breeders 1 work on POD (1990/1991)....Yo La Tengo Arrives w/Painful in 1993....Violent,Passionate,Dissident & Creative GUITAR driven Indie Rock...did Tanya Show him the way ?? I think so,if not very coincidental
1) Ira Kaplan........Donelly lit the trail but Kaplan turned it into a Four Lane Highway...He can carry a band by himself..seriously rhythm machine, microphone, guitar, amp & PA...HE COULD DO IT...He's that Good,That Orchestral,he can say more with an Instrumental than most bands can w/Lyrics...The first time I saw him I went w/2 Guitar Players..Good Guitar Players...after the show #1 said "I can't play guitar"...#2 said "I'm turning my guitar into a coffee table"..The 8x10 Club in Baltimore 1994..Nobody can go from Santo & Johnny Sleepwalk to Lower East Side Sonic Assault as seamlessly as Kaplan...a little Jerry Garcia.little Jimmy Page (Kinks Studio Work You Really Got me,Donavan Hurdy Gurdy Man..yep Page) whole lot of Lou Reed & Tanya but mostly just him...met him once, kind of rude ,abrupt,hyper...but alas GENIUS...Ira Kaplan was not our Generations Hendrix but rather Hendrix his generations Ira Kaplan....If you missed the Glory Day's of YLT 93-2000....Sorry,it was magical
The first Indie band was The Count Bishops, a south London band who was on the Pub circuit in the mid to late 1970s. Founded by Mike Spenser, there was a serious bidding war between Stiff and Chiswick Records to be signed. Iβd even say theyβre the missing lin between garage rock and The Smiths, Blur and Fat White Family.
Probably either something by The Charlatans (Silent Night is a fave) or Stone Roses (Sally Cinammon, I am the ressurection or maybe even waterfall) are true Manchester Indie classics.
The Cranberries influenced what is now called indie rock.
Just to add on, I'm looking for pop artists that might just pop out (no pun intended). I'm looking for something to do at a talent show.
