Union General Robert Seaman Granger graduated from West point in 1838. Among his graduating class of 45 cadets, Granger was ranked 28th. Granger had been captured in Texas early on in the war and paroled. He later returned to command a Kentucky militia.
Granger announced the end of slavery in June 19,1865 which marked the celebration of Juneteenth.
