The founder of GRJ was Mai Chaza (Matenga), a zimbabwean woman from a very modest background. She founded the church in the 1950s after she had a death experience and was send back by Jesus to do God's work in Africa. After her profound experience she went about praying for the sick and baptising people. Those that where healed stayed and a compound began to develop where faith healing was taking place.
It became apparent that she was full of the Holy Ghost as more and more people got healed. Astonishing miracles happened including the blind receiving their sight and people being raised from the dead. Angels were seen within the church and thousands gave their lives to Jesus Christ. The compound is made mud huts but in God's eyes it is the City of the Lord, the heavenly Jerusalem, a city of counterless angels in joyful assembly.
