During the Buddha's lifetime, the Buddha was the head of Buddhism.

The Theravadins believe that the Buddha specifically declined to appoint a successor, although generally they believe that Sariputta was his successor. They do not believe that there was any head of Buddhism after Sariputta, unless you wish to count the Sangha Councils.

The Mahayanists believe that the Buddha appointed Mahakasyapa to be his successor, and that the lineage of successors (patriarchs) continued for some time afterwards. Generally, they do not believe that there is currently a head of Buddhism.

There are two schools of Korean Zen, however, each of whom believes that the head of their denomination is the head of Buddhism.

Most religions do not have a head of their organization. This includes the Christians, Moslems, Jews, Hindus and Buddhists. Many sects do have heads (e.g The Pope for ROman Catholics) but the authority does not spread to all others of the religion.

Buddhism is not a single religion in the same way that Islam and Christianity are not single religions. There are many divisions (schools and sects) in all of these religions, each with its own leader and traditions.

In the same way that there is no single corporal head of Christianity, there is no single head of Buddhism. As in Christianity where the Roman Catholic Pope is a well known leader of oe sect, the Dalai Lama is often pointed to as the head of Buddhism by the uninformed. He is not. He is the head of a the Gelug or "Yellow Hat" branch of Tibetan Buddhism, but is well known for his winning the Nobel Peace Prize and his frequent public appearances.
