Former Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, a Reagan nominee who presided over the Supreme Court for more than 18 years (1986-2005), died in September 2005. He is the most recent Chief Justice to die while still in office.

Rehnquist was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2004, and took a leave of absence for treatment, returning to the bench in late March 2005. He died September 3, 2005, and was buried beside his late wife, Nan, in Arlington National Cemetery.

Chief Justice Rehnquist was succeeded by the incumbent Chief Justice, John G. Roberts, Jr.
