∙ 12y agoThe last Viceroy of India was Lord Mountbatten who held that post for a mere 79 days in 1947. During his short reign the Indian Empire was partioned into Pakistan and India with many clashes between Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims resulting in thousands of deaths in The Punjab and in Bengal. Lord Mountbatten later became first Sea Lord and was assassinated in 1979 by the Irish Republican Army.
