There is no "Northern Buddhist" division in Buddhism. Each Buddhist sect and division has its own methods of selecting a leader. There is no general leader of Buddhism, or even of the major Buddhist Divisions. The existence of a general leader such as the Roman Catholic (Christian sect) popes not common in religion. A parallel does not exist for the totality of the Christian, Moslem, Jewish or Hindu religions.
Like Christianity the leader of the religion is the pope. I am working on a buddist project and i don't think that there is a certain leader of the religion that i know of ....unless if its buddah.....but don't trust my answer :] i may be wrong
