Captain Lang Reese, a native of Washington, DC, graduated from Saint Albans High School in 1978. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy where he received a Bachelor of Science degree and graduated with distinction in 1982. Captain Reese also holds a Master of Science degree from Salve Regina University in Newport, RI. Additionally, he is a graduate of the Command and Staff College at the Naval War College and the Armed Forces Staff College.
Upon completion of initial nuclear propulsion training, Captain Reese served in USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) as Reactor Mechanical Division Officer. Subsequent sea assignments included tours as Fire Control Officer in USS TATTNALL (DDG 19), Reactor Training Assistant in USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), Operations Officer in USS THORN (DD 988), and Executive Officer in USS Arkansas (CGN 41). In February 2000, Captain Reese completed a tour as Commanding Officer, USS PAUL F. FOSTER (DD 964). Under his command, PAUL F. FOSTER successfully participated in FIFTH Fleet Operations in the Arabian Gulf and earned the Battle "E" in recognition as the best ship in Destroyer Squadron NINE. In July 2002, he served as Reactor Officer in USS ABRAHAM Lincoln (CVN 72), participating in OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM during a 10-month deployment. In November 2006, he served as the 64th Commander of Destroyer Squadron FOURTEEN. Additionally, Commodore Reese was the Plank Owner for FFG CLASSRON responsible for support of the manning, training and equipment missions for all 30 FFGs in the Navy.
While ashore, Captain Reese has served as a Yard Patrol Craft OIC conducting ship-handling instruction at the Naval Education and Training Center, Newport, RI. In February 1998, he was assigned as a Program Integrator for the Navy Theater Wide Program in the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization. In September 2004, he was the Head, Surface Nuclear Programs and Placement at the Navy Personnel Command in Millington, TN. From May 2008 until December 2010, he was assigned as Deputy Director, Total Force Requirements Division (OPNAV N12) in Washington, DC. Captain Reese most recently reported onboard as the Chief of Staff of Naval District Washington in December 2010.
Captain Reese wears the Legion of Merit (2nd award), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (5th award), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2nd award), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various other personal and unit awards.
Captain Reese is married to the former Kara-Ann McNulty of Newport, RI. They have three sons, Thomas, Dempsey and Steven.
