∙ 9y agoThere is no official national poet designation in England. Perhaps the nearest idea is the Poet Laureate, who is essentially attached to the royal household. Ben Jonson is usually considered the first to hold this office in its modern form, from 1617, though the term had been used earlier, and poets were attached informally to monarchs. The first time the office was given by letters patent was in 1670, to John Dryden.
The phrase 'National Poet' is more usually used to refer to William Shakespeare, but as an ongoing part of the nation's identity, not an office held by successive people.
