According to tradition, King David chose this symbol because the first and last letters of his name 'D' in the ancient Hebrew alphabet look just like two triangles. By inverting the last letter D' (downward-pointing triangle in ancient Hebrew) and combining it with the first letter (upward-pointing triangle in Ancient Hebrew) the inevitable result would be what is commonly known as the Star of David. Geometrically speaking it is a perfectly symmetrical hexagram composed of two same-sized equilateral triangles combined together as one figure, but pointing in opposite directions.

This includes when the 12 tribes are encamped somewhere for the night and are responsible in guarding and defending each of the 12 external sides of the perimeter. It also indicates when they are on the offensive, and marching off in battle-formation to conquer the Promised Land.

Lastly, the Star of David is not only 12-sided but can also be subdivided perfectly into 12 triangular segments that are the exact same shape and size (6 inner triangles matching 6 outer points).
