Saint Dymphna (Irish, Damhnat) has long been invoked against mental illness. Accounts of her life and martyrdom date to the 13th century, but their historical reliablity is doubtful. The saint is said to have been a native of Ireland, the daughter of a chieftain and a Christian mother. When her mother died, Dymphna's father wished to marry his own daughter. Horrified, Dymphna and her confessor fled to Belgium; her father pursued the fugitives and murdered both. The shrine of St. Dymphna is in Gheel, Belgium together with a hospital for the mentally ill. Her feastday is May 15.
