Members of The People's Will party made multiple attempts on Czar Alexander II's life for many years prior to his death. On March 13, 1881, members of the party succeeded in killing the Czar through the use of a bomb.

Czar Nicholas II was murdered on the night of July 16/17, 1918, by members of the Bolsheviks who had seized power in Russia in the October Revolution in 1917.
That would be Nicholas II, who abdicated for himself AND his son in 1917. He and his family were killed by the Bolsheviks afterwards.
Alexander/Catherine Palace was the main residence of the Tsar and his family. But they did have over twenty palaces and mansion at their disposal, ah the decadence. They lived mainly in Alexander Palace in Tsarskoe Selo, Russia (Tsarskoe Selo stands for "Czar's Village." It was yellow and probably one of their smaller palaces. They lived in Livadia Palace and Peterhof Palace over the summer. The Winter Palace (seen in the Disney Movie "Anastasia", used to be the main residence of past Czar's, but Nicholas II was told he could not live there because of security problems.
Tsar Nicholas II of Russia was officially overthrown when he abdicated the throne on March15, 1917. His political power had effectively ended a few days before that, so the abdication was but a formality. This was probably done in a futile effort to save the lives of himself and his family. It was in vain however as he and all of his family were executed on July 17, 1918.
Alexander II was killed near his palace in 1881. A bomb was thrown at him by a terrorist group known as the 'Peoples Will'.
After the Czar Alexander II's emancipation edict, all the personal serfdom was abolished.
