President James A. Garfield was shot by Charles J. Guiteau at 9:30 a.m. on July 2, 1881 in Washington, D.C.. Garfield had been in office less than four months. He was the second of four presidents to be assassinated. Guiteau shot Garfield twice with a .442 caliber Webley British Bulldog revolver, but Garfield lingered for 11 weeks, dying of blood poisoning caused by poor 19th Century medical care on September 19, 1881. Guiteau was unbalanced and believed Garfield should have awarded him an ambassadorship. He was hanged for the murder on June 30, 1882.
