Simon bar Kochba, given name Simon ben Kosevah. He was hailed as the Messiah by Rabbi Akiba, who gave him the name bar Kochba -- meaning son of the star. He was an effective general, defeating the Romans and driving them out of large areas before the full might of the Roman Empire could be brought to bear on him.

The banishment of the Jews from Jerusalem in 135 AD began what movement?

The year 135 AD or CE marked the end of the revolt against the Roman empire that was led by the Jewish leader Bar Cocheba. Some historians say he claimed to be the Messiah. For three years Bar Cocheba fought the Roman legions. The end of the revolt in 135 AD/CE forced most Jews out of Judea. At that time there was no political movement such as "Zionism" to form a new Jewish state in Judea, which was a part of the Roman province of Syria.

What was the Third Jewish Revolt?

The Third Jewish Revolt is also known as the Bar Kokhbar War. This revolt against Roman rules took place between 132 and 135 AD. According to Dio the revolt was a disaster for both the Jews and the Romans. Highlights were:* 580,000 rebels lost their lives;* Romans legions destroyed over 1,000 Jewish villages;* Many civilians died from famine and fires;* Judea was renamed Syria Palaestina;* Jews were forbidden to enter Jerusalem; and* Dio Cassius provides no number of Roman deaths, only that "numerous Romans died".This final large revolt intensified the Jewish Diaspora.
