The history of TCP/IP is like the protocol -- interdependent design and development conducted by several people and brought together as one. Following the design of TCP/IP byRobert Kahn and Vinton Cerf as described in the previous pages, DARPA contracted with three sites to develop operational versions: * BBN. A TENEX/PDP-10 implementation led by Ray Tomlinson and Bill Plummer. * Stanford. A BCPL/PDP-11 implementation led by Richard Karp from Cerf's group. * The University College London. A PDP-9 implementation led by Peter Kirstein. Four increasingly better versions of TCP/IP were developed -- TCP v1, TCP v2, a split into TCP v3 and IP v3 in the spring of 1978, and then stability with TCP v4 and IPv4 -- the standard protocol still in use on the internet today.

What is TCP over IP?

TCP/IP is a "protocol suite", i.e., a group of related protocols, protocols that work together. It is named after two of the most important protocols, TCP and IP - but the TCP/IP stack is made up of many more protocols, it is not just those two.TCP/IP is a "protocol suite", i.e., a group of related protocols, protocols that work together.
