The Killdeer western arms were made by Western Arms Company around 1900. These were rifles that were commonly used in hunting and came with varied specifications.Ê
Turn of the century
The Killdeer is named the Killdeer because when scientists first heard its call it sounded like it was saying, "kill-deer".

Any American rifle made prior to 1832 would be a flintlock with a clamp on the hammer to hold the piece of flint. There was a Western Arms Company manufacturing percussion revolvers c. 1851, a Western Arms Corporation importing cartridge arms c. 1990 which may still be in operation, and an unknown manufacturer made .22 rifles marked "Killdeer - Western Arms" around 1900. None of these could be called a "buffalo rifle." My best guess at this point is that you have perhaps mis-identified a small-bore utility shotgun marked with a trade name selected by the retailer sometime between about 1890 and 1940. Please feel free to prove me wrong by posting a complete description of your firearm or even better, a link to a photo album with several clear digital pictures of the overall gun and close-ups of the action.

The Lefever Arms Co., Inc. that made the Nitro Special Double and Western Arms Corp. that made the Long Range Double began as seperate corporations that were owned by the same folks that owned Ithaca Gun Co., and the guns were built in the Ithaca factory. The early Nitro Specials were marked "Lefever Arms Co., Inc., Ithaca, N.Y." and the early Long Range Doubles were marked "Western Arms Corp., Ithaca, N.Y." Around 1933, they lumped the brands together and the later Lefevers were marked "Lefever Arms Branch, Ithaca Gun Co., Inc." and the Long Range Doubles were marked "Western Arms Branch Ithaca Gun Co., Inc." The Western Arms Long Range Double had a frame made of malleable iron. These were utility grade shotguns- value in 95% condition is about $225.
Western Arms was a division of Ithaca. These guns were manufactured between 1929 and 1946.
