The first KKK was founded around 1866 in Pulaski, Tennessee as something of a joke by about 6 former members of the defeated Confederate army; "ludicrous initiations, the baffling of public curiosity, and the amusement for members were the only objects of the Klan." Gradually the Klan adopted a much more sinister purposes such as vigilante actions against freed slaves and the supposed restoration of White supremacy and the overthrow of the Republican state governments. The names of the 6 original founders are not clearly known.

Nathan Bedford Forrest, a former Lieutenant General in the defeated Confederate forces was the first Grand Wizard of the KKK so he often gets credit for making the organization - but he was not an original member.

Confederate Civil War veterans Captain John C. Lester, Major James R. Crowe, John D. Kennedy, Calvin Jones, Richard R. Reed, Frank O. McCord. The name KU KLUX derrives from the greek word kyklos. It means Circle. Instead of the founders calling it the kyklos klan, They called it the KU KLUX KLAN. Many people mistake as its creator. NOT TRUE! Genral Nathan Bedford Forrest was GRANTED CONTROL of the Klan. He was the first Imperial Wizard. That's the leader of the entire klan. The KKK first started off as a social club. Simular to a collage freturnity. The robes and hoods were simply the freturnal uniform.
