A republic is the rule of law: the rulers are included in a body of citizens from whom leaders are selected and all people are subject to the laws enacted by that body. A democracy is a regime type where power and legitimacy of power rests directly with the people; they select, check, and are represented by themselves as opposed to any singular social group (e.g.) nobility, monarchy, etc.)

simple answer:

Citizens are expected to participate more actively in a democracy, having a dominate say on all laws and beliefs passed.

In a republic, citizens do not participate as directly, they elect a local representative to govern for them and make a call on all rules.

Both America and Australia are run as republics but claim to be democratic societies. However, this can be explained by the fact that true democracy is sometimes called "direct democracy" while a republic can be called and "indirect democracy" is the people still play a role in government despite not directly controlling it.

Why did the ancient Greek city-state Athens have a direct democracy while the Romans had a republic?

Republic and democracy are two different things. A Republic can be a democracy, just as a constitutional monarchy today can be a democracy. Democracy existed in the Roman Republic, as it had three different assemblies of the citizens (Centuriate, Tribal, Plebeian). Athens went through phases - monarchy, oligarchy, limited democracy, radical democracy.

What type of democracy did the roman-republic practice?

Technically, the Romans had a republic, not a democracy. Romans voted for their political leaders (consuls, praetors, tribunes, aediles, and quaestors). Elected politicians gained entry into the Senate, the ruling political body of the Republic. The elected officials also ran the military campaigns.
