However Mussolini tried to assert Italian claims to Corsica and sent 90,000 troops to occupy Corsica in November 1940. In July 1943 the Italians were joined by about 40,000 German troops fugitives from the disaster in North Africa. The Allies should have invaded either Corsica or Sardinia instead of Sicily, because from either Corsica or Sardinia the next Allied step could have been either southern France, or Italy NORTH of Rome - or anywhere in between, which would have forced the Germans to try to defend this vast expanse of coast. From Sicily, the only place to go was onto the toe of the Italian boot, maybe the ankle...
