Battle of Antietam (Battle of Sharpsburg) Sep 17 1862 On the day there was no clear winner on the battlefield, even though there were 23,000 casualties. But the strategic winner was the North. General Lee withdrew his troops from Maryland and was never seen there again. President Lincoln also made political capital out of the battle which helped to keep Great Britain out of the war.
The North won Antietam.
It happened because of an unexpected piece of luck, when a set of the enemy's orders found its way into McClellan's hands.
It meant he was able to force Lee to fight on an unfavourable ground when he wasn't ready.
But he didn't move quickly enough to exploit his advantage to the full. Also there was a Confederate spy in the camp, who was able to alert Lee as to what to expect.
Although McClellan could claim a victory (and a politically important one), he was criticised for not pursuing and destroying Lee's army, which was able to escape back to Virginia.
For Lincoln, it was one disappointment too many, and he removed McClellan from command.
The battle of Antietam is recognized as a marginal Northern victory.

The North and the South sometime like to refer to them by different criteria. Bull Run (a small stream) was the site of the first battle of the war. The South called it Manassas after the nearest town. In the same way, the South refers to the Battle of Sharpsburg, the nearest town to Antietam Creek, where that battle was fought. The North calls it Antietam. Ditto, Murfreesboro (Stones River). The Northern style has become accepted as the official version. It is in the character of the South that it likes to stick to its own versions as a sort of protest. On one level, they're still fighting the Civil War.
