Around 1609, the Dutch (colonists from the Netherlands) were the first to settle the New York region, which they called "New Netherland." The city of New Amsterdam became New York when it was taken over by the British in 1667.

The 13 British colonies were part of the British Empire. The British controlled and governed the colonies in a manner that helped and hurt the colonies at the same time. Britain was a major world power and thus could protect the colonies on North America. At the same time, taxation, a vital part of any society, was controlled by the British from England. The colonists had no representation in the British parliament to express opinions or vote on any tax measures.
