Domino's Pizza and the Detroit Tigers were both formerly owned by Thomas S Monaghan (born March 25, 1937 in Ann Arbor, Michigan).

He founded Domino's Pizza in 1960 in Ypsilanti, Michigan along with his brother James by borrowing $500 from a local bank to buy an old local pizzeria formerly called DomiNick's and a VW Beetle to use for deliveries.

In 1961 James decided to leave the partnership and Thomas "bought out" James' share by letting him take the VW Bug while he kept the business!

Thomas bought the Detroit Tigers in 1983 and they won the world series the following year. Monaghan ultimately sold the Tigers to his competitor Mike Ilitch of Little Caesar's Pizza in 1992.

Interestingly he published his autobiography in 1986, entitled Pizza Tiger; a nod to his combined passions for both pizza and Baseball.

In 1998 Thomas announced his retirement and relinquished his involvement in the day-to-day running of Domino's Pizza after 38 years, selling 93% of his shares to Boston based investment firm Bain Capital Inc for a sum of around $1 billion - worth just a bit more than half a VW bug!
