Did you have a contract? Are you currently in possession of the car? If so then the car is yours (with stipulatons) ....the deal was between you and individual (1). As the brother has no power over the estate of the deceased he has no right to change the agreement previously agreed upon. Even without a signed title you can file to have a new one issued and depending on your state you can have one granted due to certain circumstance.....if the brother HAS the car and is no longer willing to give you posession for the remaining 500 then he is legally obligated to repay the money paid to his brother for assuming the debt he brother had (owing you the car for payments). Either way you'll need to prove the amount you've paid so far i.e bank statements, cancelled checks or money order receipts.
