French, British and US citizens were forbidden from joining by their governments but large numbers joined anyways. Many ended up in the famous "International Brigades" fighting for the socialist Republican government. Small numbers fought for the Fascist government, most notably the Irish Blackshirts lead by Eoin O'Duffy.
