Franklin Roosevelt was the only one who was elected three times or more.

Grover Cleveland ran as a Democrat three times and won two times.

Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson came in second the first time they ran and then won the next two times. Neither actually ran , in the modern sense of a campaign, the first time that they received electoral votes.

William Jennings Bryan ran three times for the Democrats and lost three times.

Henry Clay was a candidate one time before national parties were formed and then ran two more times as the Whig candidate.

Martin Van Buren ran for a third time on the minor Free Soil ticket.

Several minor party candidates ran three or more times. Norman Thomas and Eugene Debs, for example, were perennial third party candidates.

Not counting failed attempts to gain a party nomination, the only person who won one AND lost two U. S. Presidential Elections was Martin Van Buren (won in 1836, lost in 1840 and 1848).

How many times did William Taft run for president?

He became president in 1945 and was reelected in 1948. Harry Truman ran for president once, in 1948. He was elected Vice President in 1944 and assumed the presidency in 1945 upon the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Although he was not subject to the new 22nd Amendment, which, in part, limits the number of times a person who served at least half of a term to which he was not elected can be elected president to one, he chose not to run in 1952. To date (2012) there has been only one president since Truman who was eligible for reelection but chose not to run: Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968.
