if you are referring to Charles I as in Charlemagne, he was succeeded by Louis the pious. But there were multiple Charles I throughout Europe.
I am guessing you may be referring to the British king, Charles I, who was executed for treason in 1649. He was eventually succeeded by his son Charles II in 1660, a few years after Oliver Cromwell died and the monarchy had been restored.
