A famous quote says it best: "Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it." George Santayana meant if you do not know what happened in the past you will make the same mistakes. Studens should learn hisjtory so they don't make the same mistakes.
To forget your history is to be doomed to repeat it. We study history to learn about the few things than our ancestors did right in the world, and the MANY things that they did wrong, in the hope that we will learn from their mistakes. You see, we human beings can ONLY learn from mistakes. But learning from OUR OWN mistakes is painful and dangerous. So we try to learn from the mistakes that other people have made. And past presidents have done a few things right, and gotten a LOT of things wrong. We should learn from THOSE mistakes, so that we can go forward from there and make new and innovative mistakes of our OWN.
It is commonly said "Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it." That should be a good enough reason to study history.
It is said "Those who don't know history will repeat it". This is true. If we don't know what was done in the past, we will make some of the same mistakes and such.
The advantage to studying history is that you can Lear about the mistakes and successes of the past. From those, you can try to repeat successes and avoid repeating mistakes. Plus, some people enjoy it. The only disadvantage to studying it is that some people do not like studying history.
It is a matter of opinion really, but for me, it means that in the past, you have made mistakes and it is important not to forget them unless you want to go through that again.

So that we can learn from our mistakes.... "those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it...."
History is important because we get to learn from others' mistakes. The old saying is: "those who do not learn from the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them."
It means that people who don't know their mistakes are actually going to repeat it
Those that don't learn from history, are doomed to repeat it.
Yes and No. What he said was "Those who do not read and understand history are doomed to repeat it." Truman actually paraphrased a quote by George Santayana (a Spanish poet & philosopher), who said "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." I hope that helped?~S. Willis (average guy)
People in positions of power are typically well educated and familiar with history. This has always been the case, yet we continue to repeat the mistakes of the past. People usually make decisions based on intuition, personal morality, and social norms, not the rational analysis of something abstract and removed like history - It isn't that "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it", but rather, "Those who learn from history are still doomed to repeat it".
A famous quote says it best: "Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it." George Santayana meant if you do not know what happened in the past you will make the same mistakes. Studens should learn hisjtory so they don't make the same mistakes.
