Elizabeth was known for her lack of patience and outbursts of rage. She once broke the finger of one of her ladies in waiting. She controlled every aspect of her ladies including their suitors and education. She was said to have been most angry when disobeyed by her ladies in waiting. She also was known to have shouted passionately with Lord Robert Dudley. It was Robert Dudley's wife, Amy (not Walter Raleigh) that was found dead at the bottom of the stairs in her home after she suspiciously cleared her house of all servants that morning. Although Amy's death seemed convenient for Elizabeth, many historians and scholars doubt her involvement. Lord Robert Dudley had not spent the night in the same house with his wife in over a year prior to her death because his bed chamber was moved right next to the Queen's bed chamber and he lived at court. It hardly seems reasonable to believe that Elizabeth would have ever married Dudley because of his low birth and hence would have had nothing to gain by the scandal of murder. His father and grandfather had both been executed for treason and this made him unpopular to the majority of English citizens. Elizabeth may have been fiery in her temper but her outbursts seem to be confined to her personal life. She was relaxed in her religious views and ended religious persecution in England, famously stating that , "She had no desire to make windows into men's souls." She despised war, and her foreign policy was that of achieving her political goals with the least amount of force, destruction, and loss. Mary Queen of Scots was a cousin to Elizabeth whom she loved. Mary was forced to abdicate her throne in Scotland and came to Elizabeth for help. Because Mary was a fervent Catholic, there were continuous plots by Philip of Spain, also a Catholic, to eliminate Elizabeth and raise Mary to the throne of England. Then Mary got the support of the Pope and claimed the English throne for herself. Elizabeth did have her arrested after this, but had her housed in a luxurious castle with her court members and she was very well looked after. Mary Queen of Scots was formally tried and executed after her involvement was proven beyond dispute in three separate attempts to assassinate Elizabeth. She was beheaded in an unfortunately botched execution where it took the swordsman three blows to complete the job. Elizabeth was indeed known to be quick tempered and to have inherited her father's supremacy view of the monarchy. Unlike her grandiose father however, she relied heavily on counsel and enjoyed more than her share of luck. Compared to the tumultuous reign of her half sister, Mary Tudor, who would become known as "Bloody Mary" for her hundreds of public executions for "heresy," Elizabeth's reign was one of peace and prosperity and is often referred to as "The Golden Age" or even the "Elizabethan Era."
