First settlers were the men in Jamestown. They were mainly there to look for gold and to get rich, but within a few short months after landing most of the men had died. They picked a site to build their fort that was on swampy land, had bad water, and mosquitoes. The Natives of the area were not happy with them settling there so they would attack. New research has shown that there was also a Spanish spy.
