The Virginia Company was a joint stock company chartered by King James I of England. The Virginia Company of London successfully established the territory of Jamestown, while the Virginia Company of Plymouth was to establish a colony further north.
The Plymouth Company failed when their colony of Popham, in modern-day Maine, failed in 1608. Plymouth, Massachusetts was established by the religious separatists known as the Pilgrims after securing a land grant from Sir Edwin Sandys, a major stockholder in the failing Plymouth Company. So technically, the Virginia Company sponsored both the Jamestown and Plymouth colonies, but the latter was a bit more unofficial.
Roanoke: 1585 but it failed
Jamestown Virginia was settled on 13 May 1607.
The Pilgrims settled in what is now known as Plymouth, Massachusetts. Eventually the settlement would be considered the colony of Massachusetts.
The Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts, was the FIRST in the New England region, but the second successful English colony in North America following Jamestown, Virginia. The Jamestown colony was Britain's first permanent settlement in the Americas.
Jamestown was the first settlement in what became Virginia (named in honor of the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth) and Plymouth was the first settlement in what would become the Massachusetts Bay colony.
the London Company
If you count Roanoke as the first colony, then, it would be Jamestown. If you count Jamestown as the first, then it would be Plymouth.
Plymouth Colony (sometimes New Plymouth, or Plymouth Bay Colony) was an English colonial venture in North America from 1620 to 1691.
The Virginia Company of London financed the settlement at Jamestown.
Jamestown was founded first, and was a financial venture (they hoped to make money) Plymouth was settled for religious reasons. First settlers at Jamestown were all men, some of the first settlers at Plymouth were women.
New Amsterdam was settled just one year after Jamestown. Plymouth Colony was settled one year after Jamestown. It was in existence from 1620 to 1691.
Plymouth because there was only women in Jamestown at the time of the 1600s and im not a boy.........if i was a boy i would have chosen Jamestown.....
Since Plymouth did not survive, Jamestown was the first successful colony.
The Plymouth colony chose their leader as William Bradford and Miles Standish.
It was called Plymouth Colony. Or somtimes New Plymouth or Plymouth Bay Colony.
Jamestown was settled for economic reasons and Pymouth and Massachusetts Bay Colony were settled for religious reasons.
Plymouth Colony was better than Jamestown Colony because it was more organized in Plymouth Colony. The people knew who was in charge and they obeyed orders and worked together. Jamestown was not organized and there was also a deep resentment from the Native Americans there.
