The English Civil War was caused by Charles I, his personality was one of the major long term reasons. He married a catholic and people believed that he was trying to reintroduce Catholicism into England. (This was against English law) So he was publicly executed and Oliver Cromwell became English- protector.

Some people say it was Charles the I but other say it was also Parliaments' fault. It is a matter of opinion :)
