It depends on where you live. In Europe the start of WW2 is normally thought of as September 1, 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. Since Germany had already annexed Austria and taken over Czechoslovakia some of their inhabitants may differ as to the starting date. Soviet Russia also took advantage of the invasion as they quietly annexed the eastern half of Poland

An ally of Germany, Japan, had invaded China in 1937, so they would have a different date.

As to the reason for the fighting, the ruler of Germany, Adolf Hitler, is on record as saying they needed room for their people to spread out. As he was a politician, we may safely ignore that particular excuse.

Japan also needed room for its growing population, but, mainly, it needed mineral resources which Japan sadly lacks.
