An Allergist/Immunologist deals with the diagnosis and treatment of Allergies. A general practitioner, internal medicine doctor, physician's assistant, family nurse practitioner and a few other specialties can deal with a patient who presents with an allergic reaction. Emergency room doctors often get severe allergic reaction cases and they save the patient's life by using epinephrine and anti-histamines. If the patient arrives at the ER with severe breathing problems sometimes they have to make a tiny cut in the throat and put a tube in to open up the air passage for the patient.
Some people have mild allergies they can control with the over the counter allergy medication available in stores.
Some have to be desensitized to the item they are allergic by receiving desensitization injections - relatively pain free and does not go deep into the patient's arm.
Children should be cared for by a pediatrician or a pediatric allergist/immunologist.
