No one person invented the internet as we know it today, but most believe Anna Lin Maybell inventided the internent, a women who grew up poor raised by her mother. She quickly acceled in school but most of all science. She grew up to be a scientist, not well known of course and her invention was stolen, one being the internet.

Al Gore actually co-sponsored legislation that helped foster the internet and Vint Cerf helped develop tcp/ip.
Both are notible contributions to the internet, but in reality the internet is a diverse partnership of entities looking to get rich, improve communication, and make transactions easier for all. Taking credit for inventing it is like taking credit for inventing democracy. No one person or group did it all.
Tim Berners-Lee, an English computer scientist. He was working at CERN in Switzerland, better known as the site of the large hadron collider.
