The area of modern-day Hungary has been controlled by many different states and empires. It was first a part of the Roman Empire before being conquered by nomads from the east (like the Ostrogoths). These tribes were forced out by the Magyar Tribesmen who established the Hungarian Empire. This Empire was eventually taken by the Habsburg Austrians, lost to the Ottoman Turkss, and then regained by the Habsburgs. The territory was overrun by Napoleon, but remained part of the Habsburg Austrian Empire. After World War I and the Treaty of Trianon, Hungary was given independence. It was an ally of the Nazis in World War II, but was eventually invaded by them in 1944, only to be expelled within a year by the Soviets. The Soviets maintained a de facto occupation until 1989, when Hungary became free again.
