The US Civil War was fought between the Northern States (the United States or "Union"), and seceding Southern States.
All civil wars are one country fighting inside itself against its own people.
The Southern States were collectively known as the Confederate States of America, and the civil war was unsuccessful. A successful civil war is one in which the preexisting government is toppled, or the seceding group successfully forms their own independent government.
