What religion were the new england colonists?
Most of the New England colonists belonged to extreme Protestant groups, sometimes called Puritans because they wanted their religion to be "pure" and not tainted by contact with the Church of England or Roman Catholic faiths. The law in England at that time did not allow them to worship in the way they wanted to, so they decided to start a new life in a new country, with religious freedom.

It wasn't new, in England at the time churches were being more leanient and Protestant and other churches were forming, the Puritans went to America to maintain the old and original pure, and according to them completely perfect religion & society.

They wanted a "pure" church. They felt that the English churches were too much in decoration or rites. What is the difference between Anglicans and puritans?
It depends which Anglicans and Puritans you mean! Anglicans were members of the Church of England, and the Puritan movement sought to bring about a more 'pure' (i.e. more thoroughly reformed) church. Some of them remained within the Church of England, but others began new non-conformist groups, either out of choice or because they were ejected.
