If you are talking about the first person to ever be the President of the United States, it would be George Washington. If you are talking about the first president to be born as a US citizen, it would be Martin Van Buren.

John Hanson was chosen unanimously as President under the Articles of Confederation, America's first constitution, in 1781. All other potential candidates refused even to run against him.

Six other Presidents followed him under the Articles of Confederation: Elias Boudinot (1783), Thomas Mifflin (1784), Richard Henry Lee (1785), Nathan Gorman (1786), Arthur St. Clair (1787), and Cyrus Griffin (1788)--all before George Washington, who was elected as the first President under America's current Constitution.
