California was not bought from Mexico but was part of The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that was signed on February 2, 1848 after Mexico was defeated in the Mexican-American war (1846-1848). The US received a large amount of land and Mexico received $15 million dollars at that time (about $400 million today). In fact the treaty even avoids mentioning the states and simply redefines the new boarders.

∙ 10y agoNo. It was "acquired" from Mexico after the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). It is said it was purchased from Mexico, but the reality is, the US Government only deducted such amount from the outstanding Mexican debt to the US.
