∙ 14y agoCarl von Linné who changed his name to Carolus Linnaeus (it sounded "studied" in those days to have a Latin name) was, among other things, the 18'th century Swedish physician who developed the system of zoological classification known as "binomial nomenclature" - meaning that each species of living matter is given a "genera" (generic or general) name, and a "species" (specific) name, to identify one from the other.
Examples are Home sapiens meaning human being, and Solinum tuberosum meaning potato.
These distinctions are especially important when two subtances closely resemble each other but are actually unrelated. An example is the pill bug - the one in the garden that rolls into a ball when disturbed. It, in fact, is not a "bug" or insect at all, but, like the wood louse, is actually a "crustacean" more closely related to lobsters and crabs.

One year later, he transferred to the acclaimed University of Uppsala, in Sweden. He went to the Netherlands in 1735 and completed his medical degree at the University of Harderwijk. He then attended the University of Leiden for further studies. That same year, he published the first edition of his Systema Naturae and in 1741 acquired a professorship at Uppsala.
